Chapter 10

Update:  2024.01.03

1 Cor. 10:1 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) I absolutely do not desire (ou thelō) you (humas) to be ignorant (agnoein), brothers (adelphoi), that (hoti) the (hoi) fathers (pateres) of us (hēmōn) were being (ēsan) all (pantes) under (hupo) [authority, AE] of the (tēn) cloud (nephelēn);

and (kai) all (pantes) came through (diēlthon) through (dia) the (tēs) sea (thalassēs);

1 Cor. 10:2 (LIT/UBS4) and (kai) all (pantes) into (eis) the (ton) Moses (mōsēn) were baptized (ebaptisthēsan) in (en) the (tē) cloud (nephelē) and (kai) in (en) the (tē) sea (thalassē)!

(About the cloud, see Exod. 13:18-22, 14:19-20, 24, 16:10, 19:9, 16, 24:15-18, 34:5, 40:34-38; Lev. 16:2; Num. 9:15-23, 10:11-12, 34, 11:25, 12:1-10, 14:14, 16:42; Deut. 1:33, 5:22, 31:15; 1 Kings 8:10-11, 18:44; 2 Chron. 5:11-14; Ne. 9:19; Job 26:9, Ps. 78:14, 105.39; Isa. 4:5, 19:1; Ezek. 1:4, 25-28, 10:1-4)

1 Cor. 10:3 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) all (pantes) ate (ephagon) of it (auto), of the (to) Spirit-based (pneumatikon) food (brōma);

(See Exod. 16:1-36, 17:1-; Num. 11:1-; Deut. 8:3, 16; Jos. 5:12; Ne. 9:15-20; Ps. 78:12-25, 105:40-41, 114:7-8; Isa. 48:21)

1 Cor. 10:4 (LIT/UBS4) and (kai) all (pantes) drank (epion) of the (to) same (auto) Spirit-based (pneumatikon) drink (poma);

because (gar) they were drinking (epinon) out (ek) of [a] Spirit-based (pneumatikēs) Rock (petras) following (akolouthousēs) [eating of the Spirit-based food, v3, RE].

But (de) the (hē) Rock (petra) was being (ēn) the (ho) Christ (Christos).

(See Exod. 17:1-7; Num. 20:1-13; Deut. 8:15; Ne. 9:15; Ps. 78:12-25)

(For the Word’s heavenly pre-existence as a spirit-based being see Prov. 8:22-31; Dan. 3:25-28; John 1:1-2, 14, 30, 3:13, 31, 6:33, 38, 41, 50-51, 58-62, 8:23-26, 58, 13:3, 16:27-30, 17:5-8, 24; Rom. 8:29; 1 Cor. 10:4, 9, 15:47; Gal. 4:1-5; Eph. 4:8-10, Phil. 2:6-7; Col. 1:15; Heb. 1:4-6, 3:2; 1 Pet. 1:20; 1 John 1:2; Rev. 3:14)

1 Cor. 10:5 (LIT/UBS4) BUT (all’), the (ho) God (theos) absolutely did not well-approve (ouk eudokēsen) in (en) the (tois) majority (pleiosin) of them (autōn);

because (gar) they were strewn down (katestrōthēsan) in (en) the (tē) desolate place (erēmō)!

1 Cor. 10:6 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) these ones (tauta) were caused to become (egenēthēsan) types5179 (tupoi) of us (hēmōn), in (eis) the (to) [ignorance, v1, RE] of us (hēmas) not (mē) to be (einai) ones lusting over (epithumētas) malicious things (kakōn), down according to as (kathōs) those ones also (kakeinoi) lusted over (epethumēsan) [them, AE].

1 Cor. 10:7 (LIT/UBS4) But neither (mēde) cause yourselves to become (ginesthe) idolaters (eidōlolatrai), down according to as (kathōs) some (tines) of them (autōn)

So be it as (hōsper) it has been written (gegraptai), “The (ho) people (laos) sat down (ekathisen) to eat (phagein) and (kai) to drink (pein), and (kai) stood up (anestēsan) to play (paizein).”

(See Exod. 32:6)

1 Cor. 10:8 (LIT/UBS4) But neither (mēde) may we fornicate (porneuōmen) down according to as (kathōs) some (tines) of them (autōn) fornicated (eporneusan), and (kai) twenty (eikosi) three (treis) thousands (chiliades) fell (epesan) [in, AE] one (mia) day (hēmera)!

(See Num. 26:61-65)

1 Cor. 10:9 (LIT/UBS4) But neither (mēde) may we test out (ekpeirazōmen) the (ton) Christ (Christon), down according to as (kathōs) some (tines) of them (autōn) tested (epeirasan) [the Christ, RE], and (kai) under (hupo) [authority, AE] of the (tōn) serpents (opheōn) they were being destroyed (apōllunto).

(See Num. 21:4-9. Please notice that apostle Paul refers to the Christ as a living being of some kind who was present with the children of Israel in the days of Moses, and who was judging the children of Israel throughout their exodus from Egypt.)

1 Cor. 10:10 (LIT/UBS4) But neither (mēde) you murmur (gonguzete), so be it down as (kathaper) some (tines) of them (autōn) murmured (egongusan), and (kai) they caused themselves to be destroyed (apōlonto) under (hupo) [authority, AE] of the (tou) ruiner (olothreutou).

(See Num. 16:41-50)

1 Cor. 10:11 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) these (tauta) [malicious things, v6, RE] <were> typically5179 (tupikōs) walking together with4819 (sunebainen) those ones (ekeinois).

But (de) it was written (egraphē) for (pros) [the sake, AE] of [a] mind-setting3559 (nouthesian) of us (hēmōn), into (eis) whom (hous) the (ta) ends (telē) of the (tōn) ages (aiōnōn) have come down adjacent2658 (katēntēken).

1 Cor. 10:12 (LIT/UBS4) And so (hōste) the one (ho) concluding (dokōn) to have stood (hestanai), look (blepetō) [that, AE] he may not fall (mē pesē).

1 Cor. 10:13 (LIT/UBS4) [A] testing (peirasmos) has absolutely not taken you (ouk eilēphen) if (ei) not (mē) [a] mortal one (anthrōpinos)!

But (de) the (ho) God (theos) [is] [a] believable one (pistos), one who (hos) shall absolutely not allow (ouk easei) you (humas) to be tested (peirasthēnai) over (huper) what (ho) you can inherently power yourselves (dunasthe) [to bear, AE]!

BUT (alla), together with (sun) the (tō) testing (peirasmō), he shall make (poiēsei) the (tēn) walk out (ekbasin) also (kai) of the (tou) [testing, RE], to inherently power yourselves (dunasthai) to bear up under (hupenenkein) [it, AE]!

1 Cor. 10:14 (LIT/UBS4) So be it therefore (dioper), beloved ones (agapētoi) of me (mou), flee (pheugete) away from (apo) the (tēs) idolatry (eidōlolatrias).

1 Cor. 10:15 (LIT/UBS4) As (hōs) to thoughtful ones (phronimois) I speak (legō)!

You (humeis) determine (krinate) what (ho) light I shed5346 (phēmi)!

1 Cor. 10:16 (LIT/UBS4) The (to) cup (potērion) of the (tēs) eulogy (eulogias) which (ho) we eulogize (eulogoumen), is it (estin) absolutely not (ouchi) [a] fellowship (koinōnia) of the (tou) blood (haimatos) of the (tou) Christ (Christou)!?

The (ton) bread (arton) which (hon) we break (klōmen), is it (estin) absolutely not (ouchi) [a] fellowship (koinōnia) of the (tou) body (sōmatos) of the (tou) Christ (Christou),

1 Cor. 10:17 (LIT/UBS4) that (hoti) the (hoi) many (polloi) are (esmen) one (heis) loaf of bread (artos), one (hen) body (sōma)!?

Because (gar) the (hoi) [many, RE] [are] all (pantes) held together (metechomen) out (ek) of the (tou) one (henos) loaf of bread (artou)!

(For what is God’s prophesied true “tent”, his new holy place under his new covenant, the prophesied promise of the Father to place himself into believers to live in them as his new permanent domicile, a true “tent” not built with mortal’s hands but with his own hand, see Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:5-16; Isa. 8:14; Ezek. 11:16; Joel 2:28-29; Amos 9:11-12; Mat. 3:11, 16:18, 26:61, 27:39-40; Mark 14:58, 15:29; Luke 3:21-22, 24:49; *John 2:19-22, 3:1-, 4:20-24, 7:37-39, 14:2, *23; Acts 1:4-5, 2:16-18, 33, 38-39, *7:44-50, *15:16-18, *17:24, *20:28; *Rom. 8:9-11, 12:4-5; 1 Cor. *3:16-17, *6:19-20, 10:16-17, 12:12-28; *2 Cor. 5:1, *6:16-18; Gal. 3:14, 22; Eph. 1:13-14, 22-23, *2:17-22, 3:6, 4:11-16, 5:30-32; Col. 1:18-27, 2:6-10, 3:15; *1 Thes. 5:9-11; *1 Tim. 3:15; *2 Tim. 1:14; Heb. *3:4-6, 8:2, *9:11-15, *24, 10:21, 36; 1 Pet. 2:4-5; 1 John 4:12-16; Rev. 3:12, 7:15, 11:19, *13:6, *21:3, 22)

1 Cor. 10:18 (LIT/UBS4) Look at (blepete) the (ton) Israel (Israēl) down according to (kata) flesh (sarka):

are (eisin) the ones (hoi) eating (esthiontes) of the (tas) sacrifices (thusias) absolutely not (ouch) sharing partners (koinōnoi) of the (tou) altar (thusiastēriou)!?

(For a scriptural description of the two distinct Israels, the flesh-based Israel and the Spirit-based Israel, see John 10:16; Rom. 9:6-33, 7, 33; 1 Cor. 10:18)

1 Cor. 10:19 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), what (ti) light do I shed5346 (phēmi), that (hoti) [an] idolatrous sacrifice (eidōlothuton) is (estin) anything (ti), or (ē) that (hoti) [an] idol (eidōlon) is (estin) anything (ti)?

1 Cor. 10:20 (LIT/UBS4) BUT (all’), that (hoti) things which (ha) they sacrifice (thuousin), they sacrifice (thuousin) to little demons (daimoniois), and (kai) absolutely not (ou) to God (theō)!

(For the devil, the diabolical one, being the father of the Israel after the flesh, see John 8:44)

But (de) I absolutely do not desire (ou thelō) you (humas) to cause yourselves to become (ginesthai) sharing partners (koinōnous) of the (tōn) little demons (daimoniōn)!

1 Cor. 10:21 (LIT/UBS4) You can absolutely not inherently power yourselves (ou dunasthe) to drink (pinein) [the] cup (potērion) of [the] lord (kuriou) and (kai) [the] cup (potērion) of little demons (daimoniōn)!

You can absolutely not inherently power yourselves (ou dunasthe) to hold together with (meteschein) [a] table (trapezēs) of [the] lord (kuriou), and (kai) [a] table (trapezēs) of little demons (daimoniōn)!

1 Cor. 10:22 (LIT/UBS4) Or (ē) do we make the lord zealous alongside (parazēloumen ton kurion)!?

We are (semen) not (mē) stronger ones (ischuroteroi) [than the strength, AE] of him (autou)!

1 Cor. 10:23 (LIT/UBS4) [Are] all things (panta) being outside1832 (exestin) [of the law, AE]?

BUT (all’), all things (panta) [are] absolutely not (ou) mutually beneficial (sumpherei)!

[Are] all things (panta) being outside1832 (exestin) [of the law, AE]?

BUT (all’), all things (panta) absolutely do not (ou) build [a] domed-roof house3618 (oikodomei)!

(Apostle Paul uses this same construction in 1 Cor. 6:12.)

(For how near is the Kingdom of the Heavens, i.e., the Kingdom of God, see Mat. 3:2, 4:17, 6:10, 10:7, 26:29; Mark 1:15, 9:1, 14:25, 43; Luke 10:9-11, *17:20-21, 19:12, 22:18, 47; 1 Cor. 6:12, 10:23, 11:25; Heb. 8:8, 9:15)

1 Cor. 10:24 (LIT/UBS4) <Let> not one (mēdeis) [brother, v1, RE] search (zēteitō) for the (to) [mutually beneficial thing, v23, RE] of himself (heautou), BUT (alla), [search, RE] for the (to) [mutually beneficial thing, v23, RE] of the (tou) other one (heterou)!

1 Cor. 10:25 (LIT/UBS4) You [are] to eat (esthiete) any (pan) of the (to) [mutually beneficial things, v23, RE]  being sold (pōloumenon) in (en) [a] meat market (makellō), adjudicating350 (anakrinontes) not one (mēden) [mutually beneficial thing, v23, RE]  through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (tēn) conscience (suneidēsin)!

(See Acts 10:9-16)

1 Cor. 10:26 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) the (hē) land (gē), and (kai) the (to) fullness (plērōma) of her (autēs), [is] of the (tou) Lord (kuriou).

1 Cor. 10:27 (LIT/UBS4) If (ei) anyone (tis) of the (tōn) unbelieving ones (apistōn) calls you aloud (kalei humas) [to eat, v25, RE], and (kai) you desire (thelete) to make yourselves go (poreuesthai), eat (esthiete) any (pan) of the (to) [food, v3, RE] being passed along (paratithemenon) to you (humin), you adjudicating350 (anakrinontes) not one (mēden) [food, v3, RE] through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (tēn) conscience (suneidēsin)!

1 Cor. 10:28 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) if perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may enunciate (eipē) to you (humin), “This (touto) is (estin) [a] sacred place sacrifice (heirothuton),” do not eat (mē esthiete) [it, AE] through (di’) the (ton) [sake, AE] of that one (ekeinon) having made [it, AE] evident (mēnusanta), and (kai) [the sake, AE] of the (tēn) conscience (suneidēsin).

1 Cor. 10:29 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) I say (legō) conscience (suneidēsin) absolutely not (ouchi) of the (tēn) [conscience, RE] of himself (heautou), BUT (alla), of the (tēn) [conscience, RE] of the (tou) other (heterou)!

Because (gar) in order for what (hinati) [is] the (hē) freedom (eleutheria) of me (mou) judged (krinetai) under (hupo) [authority, AE] of [a] conscience (suneidēseōs) of another (allēs)?

1 Cor. 10:30 (LIT/UBS4) If (ei) I (egō) hold together with (metechō) grace (chariti), why (ti) am I blasphemed (blasphēmoumai) over (huper) [the sake, AE] of [a] thing of which (hou) I (egō) give thanks well (eucharistō)?

1 Cor. 10:31 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), whether (eite) you eat (esthiete), whether (eite) you drink (pinete), whether (eite) whatever (ti) you do (poieite), do (poieite) all things (panta) into (eis) [a] glory (doxan) of God (theou).

1 Cor. 10:32 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) cause yourselves to become (ginesthe) inoffensive ones (aproskopoi) to Judeans (Ioudaiois), and (kai) to Hellenes (Hellēsin), and (kai) to the (tē) assembly (ekklēsia) of the (tou) God (theou),

1 Cor. 10:33 (LIT/UBS4) down according to as (kathōs) I also (kagō), of all (panta), I am agreeable (areskō) to all (pasin);

not (mē) searching (zētōn) for the (to) [freedom, v29, RE] of my own (emautou), it being mutually beneficial (sumpheron), BUT (alla), the (to) [freedom, v29, RE] of the (tōn) many (pollōn), in order that (hina) they may be made whole (sōthōsin)!
