GALATIANS

Chapter 3

Update:  2024.05.31

Gal. 3:1 (LIT/UBS4) Oh (ō) foolish (anoētoi) Galatians (Galatai), who (tis) entranced (ebaskanen) you (humas)?

Jesus (Iēsous) Christ (Christos) having been staked (estaurōmenos), [as, AE] it was written before (proegraphē), [was staked, RE] down on account (kat’) for whose (hois) eyes (ophthalmous)?

Gal. 3:2 (LIT/UBS4) Only (monon) this (touto) I desire (thelō) to learn (mathein) from (aph’) you (humōn):

Out (ex) of works (ergōn) of law (nomou) did you receive (elabete) the (to) Spirit (pneuma), or (ē) out (ex) of belief (pisteōs) of [a] thing heard (akoēs)?

Gal. 3:3 (LIT/UBS4) Thusly (houtōs) you are (este) unperceptive (anoētoi) [brothers, v1:11, ER]:

you having caused yourselves to start in (enarxamenoi) Spirit (pneumati), now (nun) you cause yourselves to be made complete over (epiteleisthe) [the] flesh (sarki)!

Gal. 3:4 (LIT/UBS4) Did you suffer (epathete) so many things (tosauta) idly (eikē)?

If (ei) [idly then, AE], indeed (ge) idly (eikē) [now, AE] also (kai)?

Gal. 3:5 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), of the (ho) [Christ, v1, RE] choreographing (epichorēgōn) to you (humin) the (to) Spirit (pneuma), and (kai) energizing (energōn) inherently powered works (dunameis) among (en) you (humin), [is] [the Spirit, RE] out (ex) of works (ergōn) of law (nomou) or (ē) out (ex) of belief (pisteōs) of [a] thing heard (akoēs)?

Gal. 3:6 (LIT/UBS4) Down according to as (kathōs) Abraham (Abraam) believed (episteusen) the (tō) God (theō) and (kai) it was counted3049 (elogisthē) to him (autō) into (eis) righteousness (dikaiosunēn),

Gal. 3:7 (LIT/UBS4) so (ara) you know (ginōskete) that (hoti) the (hoi) [brothers, v1:11, ER] out (ek) of belief (pisteōs), these (houtoi) [brothers, v1:11, ER] are (eisin) sons (huioi) of Abraham (Abraam).

Gal. 3:8 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) I having gazed before at (proidousa) the (hē) writing (graphē), that (hoti) out (ek) of belief (pisteōs) the (ho) God (theos) makes righteous (dikaioi) the (ta) ethnic groups (ethnē), he caused himself to evangelize [this, AE] before (proeuēngelisato) to the (tō) Abraham (Abraam), that (hoti), “In (en) you (soi) all (panta) the (ta) ethnic groups (ethnē) shall be caused to be in [a] eulogy (eneulogēthēsontai)!”

(See Gen. 12:1-3; Gal. 3:8; Acts 3:25)

Gal. 3:9 (LIT/UBS4) And so (hōste) the (hoi) [ethnic groups, v8, RE] out (ek) of belief (pisteōs) [of Abraham, v6-7, RE], are eulogized (eulogountai) together with (sun) the (tō) believing (pistō) Abraham (Abraam).

Gal. 3:10 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) as many as (hosoi) are (eisin) out (ex) of works (ergōn) of law (nomou) are (eisin) under (hupo) [a] curse (kataran) [of law, RE].

Because (gar) it has been written (gegraptai) that (hoti), “Accursed (epikataratos) [is] everyone (pas) who (hos) absolutely does not stay in (ouk emmenei) to all (pasin) the things (tois) having been written (gegrammenois) in (en) the (tō) book (bibliō) of the (tou) law (nomou), of the (tou) [law, RE] to do (poiēsai) them (auta)!”

Gal. 3:11 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) that (hoti) in (en) law (nomō) absolutely not one (oudeis) is made righteous (dikaioutai) alongside3844, 3936 (para) to the (tō) God (theō), is obvious (dēlon);

because (hoti) the (ho) righteous (dikaios) [brother, v1:11, ER] shall cause himself to live (zēsetai) out (ek) of belief (pisteōs)!

(For a believer's responsibility to stand himself alongside of the Father through doing good works, in order to receive anything from him, see Mat. 6:1-4, 18:19, 19:26, 21:42; Mark 10:27, 12:11; Luke 1:30, 37; John 5:44, 6:45-46, 8:38-42, 9:16, 33, 17:5-8; Rom. 2:11-13, 6:13, 12:1; 1 Cor. 7:24, 8:8a; 2 Cor. 9:8; Gal. 3:11; Eph. 6:8; 1 Tim. 2:10; 2 Tim. 3:17; Tit. 2:14, 3:8,14; Heb. 10:24; James 1:5-7, 27; 1 Pet. 2:20-21; 2 Pet. 3:8; 2 John 1:3; Rev. 2:28)

Gal. 3:12 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) law (nomos) is (estin) absolutely not (ouk) out (ek) of belief (pisteōs)!

BUT (all’), the (ho) [brother, v1:11, ER] having done (poiēsas) them (auta) shall cause himself to live (zēsetai) in (en) them (autois)!

Gal. 3:13 (LIT/UBS4) Christ (Christos) bought us out1805 (exēgorasen hēmas) out (ek) of the (tēs) curse (kataras) of the (tou) law (nomou), he having caused himself to become (genomenos) [a] curse (katara) over (huper) [the sake, AE] of us (hemon);

because (hoti) it has been written (gegraptai), "Accursed (epikataratos) [is] everyone (pas), the one (ho) causing himself to hang (kremamenos) upon (epi) [a] tree (xulou);"

(For being accursed, see reference in Deut. 21:22-23.)

(For an outline of Jesus Christ’s accomplishments in his earthly agency to his heavenly Father, see the note under Mat. 3:17.)

Gal. 3:14 (LIT/UBS4) in order that (hina) in (en) Christ (Christō) Jesus (Iēsou) the (hē) eulogy (eulogia) of the (tou) Abraham (Abraam) may cause itself to come to pass (genētai) into (eis) the (ta) ethnic groups (ethnē) ;

in order that (hina) we may receive (labōmen) the (tēn) promise (epangelian) of the (tou) Spirit (pneumatos) through (dia) the (tēs) belief (pisteōs).

(For what is God’s prophesied true “tent”, his new holy place under his new covenant, the prophesied promise of the Father to place himself into believers to live in them as his new permanent domicile, a true “tent” not built with mortal’s hands but with his own hand, see Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:5-16; Isa. 8:14; Ezek. 11:16; Joel 2:28-29; Amos 9:11-12; Mat. 3:11, 16:18, 26:61, 27:39-40; Mark 14:58, 15:29; Luke 3:21-22, 24:49; *John 2:19-22, 3:1-, 4:20-24, 7:37-39, 14:2, *23; Acts 1:4-5, 2:16-18, 33, 38-39, *7:44-50, *15:16-18, *17:24, *20:28; *Rom. 8:9-11, 12:4-5; 1 Cor. *3:16-17, *6:19-20, 10:16-17, 12:12-28; *2 Cor. 5:1, *6:16-18; Gal. 3:14, 22; Eph. 1:13-14, 22-23, *2:17-22, 3:6, 4:11-16, 5:30-32; Col. 1:18-27, 2:6-10, 3:15; *1 Thes. 5:9-11; *1 Tim. 3:15; *2 Tim. 1:14; Heb. *3:4-6, 8:2, *9:11-15, *24, 10:21, 36; 1 Pet. 2:4-5; 1 John 4:12-16; Rev. 3:12, 7:15, 11:19, *13:6, *21:3, 22)

Gal. 3:15 (LIT/UBS4) Brothers (adelphoi), down according to (kata) [a] mortal (anthrōpon) I speak (legō);

[the promise, v14, RE] [is] [the] same as (homōs) [a] covenant (diathēkēn) of [a] mortal (anthrōpou) having been confirmed (kekurōmenēn);

absolutely not one (oudeis) [mortal, RE] displaces (athetei) or (ē) causes himself to make changes upon (epidiatassetai) [[a] covenant, RE]!

Gal. 3:16 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) to the (tō) Abraham (Abraam) and (kai) to the (tō) seed/sperm (spermati) of him (autou) were stated (errethēsan) the (hai) promises (epangeliai).

[[The] statement, RE] says (legei) absolutely not (ou), “And (kai) to the (tois) seeds/sperms (spermasin), as (hōs) over (epi) many (pollōn) [seeds/sperms, RE], BUT (all’), “And (kai) to the (tō) seed/sperm (spermati) of you (sou), as (hōs) over (eph’) one (henos) [seed/sperm, RE], who (hos) is (estin) Christ (Christos)!

(See Gen. 21:12)

Gal. 3:17 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) this (touto) I say (legō) of [the] covenant (diathēkēn) having been confirmed before (prokekurōmenēn) under (hupo) [the promises, v16, RE] of the (tou) God (theou):

[the] law (nomos) having come to pass (gegonōs) with (meta) the (ho) [passing, AE] of four hundreds (tetrakosia) and (kai) thirty (triakonta) years (etē), it absolutely does not nullify (ouk akuroi) [the promise, v16, RE], into (eis) the (to) idling down2673 (katargēsai) the (tēn) promise (epangelian)!

Gal. 3:18 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) if (ei) the (hē) inheritance (klēronomia) [is] out (ek) of law (nomou), [the inheritance, RE] [is] absolutely no longer yet (ouketi) out (ek) of promise (epangelias)!

But (de) the (ho) God (theos) has caused himself to be gracious (kecharistai) to the (tō) Abraham (Abraam) through (di’) [a] promise (epangelias).

Gal. 3:19 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), why (ti) the (ho) law (nomos)?

It was added to (prosetethē) [the promise, v18, RE] [as] [a] favor (charin) [for the sake, AE] of the (tōn) side-steppers (parabaseōn) [of Abraham, v18, RE], until (achris) of whom (hou) may come (elthē) the (to) seed/sperm (sperma) [of Abraham, v16, RE], to whom (hō) [the inheritance, v18, RE] has been promised (epēngeltai);

[the law, RE] having been thoroughly arranged (diatageis) through (di’) messengers (angelōn), in (en) [the] hand (cheiri) of [a] mediator (mesitou).

Gal. 3:20 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (ho) mediator (mesitēs) is absolutely not (ouk estin) [[a] mediator, RE] of one (henos) [side-stepper, v19, RE]!

But (de) the (ho) God (theos) is (estin) one (heis) [God, RE].

Gal. 3:21 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), [is] the (ho) law (nomos) down against (kata) the (tōn) promises (epangeliōn) of the (tou) God (theou)?

May it not cause itself to come to pass (mē genoito)

Because (gar) if (ei) [a] law (nomos) was given (edothē), the (ho) [law, RE] being inherently powered (dunamenos) to make [[a] side-stepper, v19, RE] alive (zōopoiēsai), really (ontōs), perhaps (an) out (ek) of law (nomou) there was being (ēn) righteousness (dikaiosunē)!

Gal. 3:22 (LIT/UBS4) BUT (alla), the (hē) writing (graphē) of the (ta) [law, RE] enclosed together (sunekleisen) all (panta) [to be] under (hupo) [authority, AE] of sin (hamartian);

in order that (hina) the (hē) promise (epangelia), out (ek) of belief (pisteōs) of Jesus (Iēsou) Christ (Christou), may be given (dothē) to the (tois) [brothers, v15, RE] believing (pisteuousin)!

Gal. 3:23 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) before (pro) the (tēn) belief (pistin) of the (tou) [Jesus Christ, v22, RE] [was] to come (elthein), we were being kept in watch (ephrouroumetha) under (hupo) [authority, AE] of law (nomon), being closed [in, AE] together (sunkleiomenoi) into (eis) [the time, AE] of the (tēn) belief (pistin) being about (mellousan) to be revealed (apokaluphthēnai).

Gal. 3:24 (LIT/UBS4) And so (hōste) the (ton) law (nomos) has become (gegonen) [a] pedagogue (paidagōgos) of us (hēmōn) into (eis) Christ (Christon), in order that (hina) we may be made righteous (dikaiōthōmen) out (ek) of belief (pisteōs) [of us, RE] [into Christ, RE].

Gal. 3:25 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the (tēs) belief (pisteōs) having come (elthousēs), we are (esmen) absolutely no longer yet (ouketi) under (hupo) [authority, AE] of [a] pedagogue (paidagōgon)!

Gal. 3:26 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) you are (este) all (pantes) sons (huioi) of God (theou) through (dia) the (tēs) belief (pisteōs) in (en) Christ (Christō) Jesus (Iēsou)!

Gal. 3:27 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) as many [brothers, v15, RE] as (hosoi) were baptized (ebaptisthēte) into (eis) Christ (Christon), enrobed themselves in (enedusasthe) Christ (Christon).

Gal. 3:28 (LIT/UBS4) There is (eni) absolutely neither (ouk) [a] Judean (Ioudaios) [brother, v15, RE], but absolutely nor (oude) [a] Hellene (Hellēn) [brother, v15, RE]!

There is (eni) absolutely neither (ouk) [a] slave (doulos) [brother, v15, RE], but absolutely nor (oude) [a] free (eleutheros) [brother, v15, RE]!

There is (eni) absolutely not (ouk) [a] male (arsen) and (kai) [a] breasted one (thēlu)!

Because (gar) you (humeis) are (este) one (heis) [Spirit, v14, RE] in (en) Christ (Christō) Jesus (Iēsou).

Gal. 3:29 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) if (ei) you (humeis) [are] of Christ (Christou), then (ara) you are (este) of the (tou) seed/sperm (sperma) of Abraham (Abraam), heirs (klēronomoi) down according to (kat’) [a] promise (epangelian).
