JOHN

Chapter 3

Update:  2024.02.29

John 3:1 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) there was being (en) [a] mortal (anthrōpos) out (ek) of the (tōn) Pharisees (Pharisaiōn), Nicodemus (Nikodēmos) [is the] name (onoma) [given, AE] to him (autō), [a] chief one758 (archōn) of the (tōn) Judeans (Ioudaiōn)

John 3:2 (LIT/UBS4) This one (houtos) came (ēlthe) to (pros) him (auton) [at, AE] night (nuktos), and (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to him (autō), "Rabbi (rhabbi), we have seen (oidamen) that (hoti) you have come (elēluthas) from (apo) God (theou), [a] teacher (didaskalos).

Because (gar) absolutely not one (oudeis) can inherently power himself (dunatai) to do (poiein) these things (tauta), the (ta) signs (sēmeia) which (ha) you (su) do (poieis), if perhaps (ean) the (ho) God (theos) may not be ( ē) with (met’) him (autou)!"

(For God making Jesus Christ his domicile, and he subsequently working IN and THROUGH Jesus Christ as his mortal agent in this cosmos, see *Mat. 9:8; Mark 6:5; Luke 5:17, 7:16; John 3:2, 5:19-20, 8:16, *29, 9:33, *10:38, *14:10-11, *16-20, 28, 16:32b; *Acts 2:22, 10:38; *2 Cor. 5:18-19; Eph. 3:16-19, 4:6; *Col. 1:19-20, 2:9; 1 John 5:20)

John 3:3 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), and (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to him (autō), "Truly (amēn), truly (amēn) I say (legō) to you (soi), if perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may not have been generated (mē gennēthē) up above (anōthen), he can absolutely not inherently power himself (ou dunatai) to see (idein) the (tēn) Kingdom932 (basilian) of the (tou) God (theou)!”

John 3:4 (LIT/UBS4) The (ho) Nicodemus (Nikodēmos) says (legei) to (pros) him (auton), “How (pōs) [can, AE] [a] mortal (anthrōpos) being (ōn) old (gerōn) inherently power himself (dunatai) to be generated (gennēthēnai)

[[A] mortal, RE] cannot inherently power himself (mē dunatai) to enter in (eiselthein) into (eis) the (tēn) belly (koilia) of the (tēs) mother (mētros) of him (autou) and (kai) to be generated (gennēthēnai) [a] second (deuteron) [time, AE]!”

John 3:5 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithe), “Truly (amēn), truly (amēn) I say (legō) to you (soi), if perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may not have been generated (mē  gennēthē) out (ek) of water (hudatos) and (kai) of Spirit (pneumatos), he can absolutely not inherently power himself (ou dunatai) to enter in (eiselthein) into (eis) the (tēn) Kingdom932 (basileian) of the (tou) God (theou)!

John 3:6 (LIT/UBS4) The (to) one having been generated (gegennēmenon) out (ek) of the (tēs) flesh (sarkos) is (esti) flesh (sarx), and (kai) the (to) one having been generated (gegennēmenon) out (ek) of the (tou) Spirit (pneumatos) is (esti) Spirit (pneuma)."

(For the way leading into life having been smothered, and for the lawyers having stolen the key of knowledge so that others cannot enter in, and subsequently for believers having to force themselves into the Kingdom of the Heavens, see Mat. 7:13-14, 21, 11:12, 16:19, 18:3-9, 19:17-26; Mark 9:43-48, 10:23-25; Luke 11:52, 13:24, 16:16, 18:16-27; John 3:3-6, 10:1-9; Acts 14:21-22)

(For what is Spirit, see John 4:24)

(For the soul-based, demon-like wisdom of mortalkind see 1 Cor. 2:13-14; *James 3:15; Jude 1:19; John 3:6; Rom. 8:5-8)

John 3:7 (LIT/UBS4) Do not be amazed (mē thaumasēs) that (hoti) I enunciated (eipon) to you (soi) it is required (dei) of you (humas) to be generated  (gennēthēsai) up above (anōthen)!

(For who caused himself to become the firstborn son of God, see 2 Sam. 7:14; Psalm 2:7; Jer. 31:33; Ezek. 11:20; Mat. 3:*13-17, 17:5; Mark 1:9-*11, 9:*7; Luke 3:*21-*22; John 1:26-34, 3:1-7; Acts 13:33; Heb. 1:*5, 5:*5, 8:*10, 12:23; 2 Pet. 1:*16-18; Rev. 21:*3, *7.)

John 3:8 (LIT/UBS4) The (to) Spirit (pneuma) blows (pnei) where (hopou) it desires (thelei), and (kai) you hear (akoueis) the (tēn) sound (phōnēn) of it (autou).

BUT (all), you have absolutely not seen (ouk oidas) from where (pothen) it causes itself to come (erchetai), and (kai) to where (pou) it gets underway (hupagei)

Thusly (houtōs) is (esti) everyone (pas), the (ho) one having been generated (gegennēmenos) out (ek) of the (tou) Spirit (pneumatos).”

(For the God, under his new covenant, being IN believers, and he working IN and THROUGH them, see Lev. 26:11-12; Ezek. 11:19-20, 36:25-27; Mat. 13:33; Luke 17:20-21; John 3:3-8, 14:20-21, 26, 17:14-21; Rom. 8:8-11; 1 Cor. 3:16-17, 6:19-20; 2 Cor. 4:3-7, 6:14-7:1, 13:3-5, 14; Gal. 1:15-16, 2:20, 4:18-19; Eph. 2:17-22, 3:14-19; Col. 1:27; 2 Tim. 1:14; Heb. 3:6, 13:20-21; 1 John 3:23-24, 4:7-8, 15-16)

John 3:9 (LIT/UBS4) Nicodemus (Nikodēmos) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), and (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to him (autō), “How (pōs) can anyone inherently power himself (dunatai) to cause himself to become (genesthai) these things (tauta)?"

John 3:10 (LIT/UBS4) Jesus (Iēsous) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), and (kai) he enunciated (eipen) to him (autō), “You (su) are (ei) the (ho) teacher (didaskalos) of the (tou) Israel (Israēl), and (kai) you absolutely do not know (ou ginōskeis) these things (tauta)?

John 3:11 (LIT/UBS4) Truly (amēn), truly (amēn) I say (legō) to you (soi), that (hoti) which (ho) we have seen (oidamen) we speak (laloumen)!

And (kai) [that, RE] which (ho) we have gazed at (heōrakamen) we witness (marturoumen)!

And (kai) the (tēn) witness (marturian) of us (hēmōn) you absolutely do not receive (ou lambanete)!

John 3:12 (LIT/UBS4) If (ei) I enunciated (eipon) to you (humin) the (ta) things upon land (epigeia) and (kai) you absolutely do not believe (ou pisteuete), if perhaps (ean) I may enunciate (eipō) to you (humin) the (ta) heavenly things (epourania) how (pōs) shall you believe (pisteusete)!?

John 3:13 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) absolutely not one (oudeis) has stepped up (anabebēken) into (eis) the (ton) heaven (ouranon) if (ei) not (mē) the (ho) [son, RE]having stepped down (katabas) out (ek) of the (tou) heaven (ouranou), the (ho) Son (huios) of the (tou) Mortal (anthrōpou)!

(For the Word’s heavenly pre-existence as a spirit-based being see Prov. 8:22-31; Dan. 3:25-28; John 1:1-2, 14, 30, 3:13, 31, 6:33, 38, 41, 50-51, 58-62, 8:23-26, 58, 13:3, 16:27-30, 17:5-8, 24; Rom. 8:29; 1 Cor. 10:4, 9, 15:47; Gal. 4:1-5; Eph. 4:8-10, Phil. 2:6-7; Col. 1:15; Heb. 1:4-6, 3:2; 1 Pet. 1:20; 1 John 1:2; Rev. 3:14)

John 3:14 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) down according to as (kathōs) Moses (Mōusēs) set above5312 (hupsōsen) the (ton) serpent (ophin) in (en) the (tē) desolate place (erēmō), thusly (houtōs) it is required (dei) for the (ton) Son (huion) of the (tou) Mortal (anthrōpou) to be set above5312 (hupsōthēnai);

(For Moses' serpent on a pole, see Num. 21:5-9)

John 3:15 (LIT/UBS4) in order that (hina) everyone (pas), the one (ho) believing (pisteuōn) in (en) to him (autō), he may hold (echē) ageless (aiōnion) life (zōēn).

John 3:16 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) thusly (houtōs), the (ho) God (theos) loved (ēgapēsen) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon), and so (hōste) he gave (edōken) the (ton) son (huion) [of him, AE], the (ton) only genus3439 (monogenē);

in order that (hina) everyone (pas), the (ho) one believing (pisteuōn) into (eis) him (auton), he may not lose himself (mē apolētai), BUT (all’), he may hold (echē) ageless (aiōnion) life (zōēn)!

John 3:17 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) the (ho) God (theou) absolutely did not send (ou apesteilen) the (ton) son (huion) into (eis) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon) in order that (hina) he may judge (krinē) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon), BUT (all’), in order that (hina) the (ho) cosmos (kosmos) may be made whole (sōthē) through (di’) him (autou)!

John 3:18 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) believing (pisteuōn) into (eis) him (auton) is absolutely not judged (ou krinetai)!

But (de) [the one, RE] not (mē) believing (pisteuōn) has been judged (kekritai) already (ēdē), because (hoti) he has not believed (mē pepisteuken) into (eis) the (to) name (onoma) of the (tou) only genus3439 (monogenous) son (huiou) of the (tou) God (theou).

John 3:19 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) this (hautē) is (estin) the (hē) judgment (krisis):

because (hoti) the (to) light (phōs) has come (elēluthen) into (eis) the (ton) cosmos (kosmon)!

And (kai) the (hoi) mortals (anthrōpoi) loved (ēgapēsan) the (to) darkness (skotos) more (mallon) than (ē) the (to) light (phōs), because (gar) the (ta) works (erga) of them (autōn) was being (ēn) [sic] evil ones (ponēra)!

John 3:20 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) everyone (pas), the one (ho) habitually practicing (prassōn) worthless things (phaula), he despises (misei) the (to) light (phōs).

And (kai) he absolutely does not cause himself to come (ouk erchetai) to (pros) the (to) light (phōs), in order that (hina) the (ta) works (erga) of him (autou) may not be reproved (mē elenchthē)!

John 3:21 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) the one (ho) doing (poiōn) the (tēn) truth (alētheian) causes himself to come (erchetai) to (pros) the (to) light (phōs), in order that (hina) the (ta) works (erga) of him (autou) may be manifested (phanerōthē), that (hoti) in (en) God (theō) he is (estin) having been caused to work (eirgasmena).”

(For Jesus Christ being prophesied as a great light coming, the one who would shed light on the knowledge of God’s Word for a people being caused to sit down in darkness, see Isa. 9:1-2, 49:1-6; Mat. 4:12-16, 10:26-27; *Mark 4:21-23; Luke 1:76-79, 2:25-32, 8:16-17, 11:33, 12:1-3; John 1:1-14, 3:1-21, 8:12, 9:5, 11:9-10, 12:34-36, 41-46; Acts 13:46-47, 26:22-23; 2 Cor. 4:1-6; Eph. 5:8, 13, 14; Col. 1:12; 1 Thes. 5:5; 1 Pet. 2:9; 2 Pet. 1:19; 1 John 2:8-10.)

John 3:22 (LIT/UBS4) With (meta) [the passing, AE] of these things (tauta) the (ho) Jesus (Iēsous) and (kai) the (hoi) disciples (mathētai) of him (autou) came (ēlthen) into (eis) the (tēn) Judean (Ioudaian) land (gēn).

And (kai) there (ekei) he was rubbing through1304 (dietriben) with (met’) them (autōn), and (kai) he was baptizing (ebaptizen).

John 3:23 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) there was being (ēn) the (ho) John (Iōannēs) also (kai) baptizing (baptizōn) in (en) Aenon (Ainōn), near (engus) the (tou) Salim (Saleim), because (hoti) much (polla) water (hudata) was being (ēn) there (ekei).

And (kai) they were causing themselves to become alongside3854 (pareginonto), and (kai) they were being baptized (ebaptizonto);

John 3:24 (LIT/UBS4) because (gar) the (ho) John (Iōannēs) was being (ēn) one having absolutely not yet been thrown (oupō beblēmenos) into (eis) the (tēn) guardroom (phulakēn)!

John 3:25 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), [a] debate (zētēsis) caused itself to come to pass (egeneto) out (ek) of the (tōn) disciples (mathētōn) of John (Iōannou), with (meta) [a] Judean (Ioudaiou), about (peri) being cleansed (kathrismou).

John 3:26 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) they came (ēlthon) to (pros) the (ton) John (Iōannēn) and (kai) enunciated (eipan) to him (autō), “Rabbi (rhabbi), [the] one who (hos) was being (ēn) with (meta) you (sou) [on the, AE] other side (peran) of the (tou) Jordan (Iordanou), to whom (hō) you (su) truly have witnessed (memarturēkas), see (ide), this one (houtos) baptizes (baptizei), and (kai) all (pantes) cause themselves to come (erchontai) to (pros) him (auton)!”

John 3:27 (LIT/UBS4) John (Iōannēs) was caused to make [a] decision (apekrithē), and (kai) he enunciated (eipen), “A mortal (anthrōpos) can absolutely not inherently power himself (ou dunatai) to receive (lambanein) but absolutely not (oude) one thing (hen), if not perhaps (mē ean) it may be (ē) having been given (dedomenon) to him (autō) out (ek) of the (tou) heaven (ouranou)!

John 3:28 Of him (autoi) you (humeis) witness (marturiete) to me (moi) that (hoti) I enunciated (eipon) that (hoti) I (egō) am (eimi) absolutely not (ouk) the (ho) Christ (Christos), BUT (all’), that (hoti) I am (eimi) one having been sent (apestalmenos) in front (emprosthen) of that one (ekeinou)!

John 3:29 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) holding (echōn) the (tēn) bride (numphēn) is (estin) the (ho) bridegroom (numphios).

But (de) the (ho) loved one (philos) of the (tou) bridegroom (numphiou), the one (ho) having stood (hestēkōs) and (kai) hearing (akouōn) him (autou), she rejoices (chairei) [with, AE] joy (chara) through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (tēn) voice (phōnēn) of the (tou) bridegroom (numphiou).

Therefore (oun) this (hautē), the (hē) joy (chara), the one (hē) of me (emē), it has been fulfilled (peplērōtai)!

John 3:30 (LIT/UBS4) It is required (dei) of that one (ekeinon) to grow (auxanein), but (de) of me (eme) to cause myself to decrease (elattousthai).

John 3:31 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) causing himself to go (erchomenos) up above (anōthen) is (estin) up over (epanō) all (pantōn).

The one (ho) being (ōn) out (ek) of the (tēs) land (gēs) is (estin) out (ek) of the (tēs) land (gēs), and (kai) he speaks (lalei) out (ek) of the (tēs) land (gēs).

The one (ho) causing himself to come (erchomenos) out (ek) of the (tou) heaven (ouranou) is (estin) up over (epanō) all (pantōn).

John 3:32 (LIT/UBS4) That which (ho) he has gazed at (heōraken), and (kai) heard (ēkousen), this (touto) he witnesses (marturei).

And (kai) the (tēn) witness (marturian) of him (autou) absolutely no one (oudeis) receives (lambanei)!

John 3:33 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) having received (labōn) the (tēn) witness (marturian) of him (autou) sealed (esphragisen) that (hoti) the (ho) God (theos) is (estin) [a] true one (alēthēs).

John 3:34 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) whom (hon) the (ho) God (theos) sent (apesteilen), he speaks (lalei) the (ta) statements (rhēmata) of the (tou) God (theou).

Because (gar) absolutely not (ou) out (ek) of [a] measurement (metrou) <does> [the true one, v33, RE] [whom the God sent, RE] give (didōsin) of the (to) Spirit (pneuma)!

(For who is the one giving the God's Spirit, and spiritually baptizing believers in it, see Mat. 3:11.  It is the messenger the God sent, Christ Jesus.)

John 3:35 (LIT/UBS4) The (ho) Father (patēr) loves (agapa) the (ton) son (huion), and (kai) has given (dedōken) all things (panta) in (en) to the (tē) hand (cheiri) of him (autou).

John 3:36 (LIT/UBS4) The one (ho) believing (pisteuōn) into (eis) the (ton) son (huion) holds (echei) ageless (aiōnion) life (zōēn).

But (de) the one (ho) being dissuaded (apeithōn) to the (tō) son (huiō), he shall absolutely not cause himself to gaze at (ouk opsetai) [ageless, RE] life (zōēn), BUT (all’), the (hē) anger (orgē) of the (tou) God (theou) stays (menei) upon (ep’) him (auton)!”
