1 CORINTHIANS

Chapter 8

Update:  2024.05.19

1 Cor. 8:1 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) about (peri) the (tōn) idolatrous sacrifices (eidōlothutōn), we have seen (oidamen) that (hoti) all (pantes) knowledge (gnōsin) we hold (echomen), the (hē) knowledge (gnōsis) puffs [us, AE] up (phusioi).

But (de) [a] loving one (agapē) builds [a] domed-roof house3618 (oikodomei).

1 Cor. 8:2 (LIT/UBS4) If (ei) anyone (tis) concludes (dokei) to have known (egnōkenai) anything (ti), absolutely not yet (oupō) did he know (egnō) [anything, RE] down according to as (kathōs) it is required (dei) to know (gnōnai)!

1 Cor. 8:3 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) if (ei) anyone (tis) loves (agapa) the (ton) God (theon), this one (houtos) has been known (egnōstai) under (hup') [authority, AE] of him (autou).

1 Cor. 8:4 (LIT/UBS4) Therefore (oun), about (peri) the (tēs) food (brōseōs) of the (tōn) idolatrous sacrifices (eidōlothutōn), we have seen (oidamen) that (hoti) [an] idol (eidōlon) in (en) [the] cosmos (kosmō) [is] absolutely not one thing (ouden)

And (kai) that (hoti) [the God, v3, RE] [is] absolutely not one (oudeis) God (theos) if (ei) not (mē) one (heis)!

1 Cor. 8:5 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) if so be it (eiper) there are (eisin) ones being said (legomenoi) [to be] gods (theoi), and (kai) if whether (eite) in (en) heaven (ouranō), if whether (eite) upon (epi) land (gēs), as (hōsper) [said, RE] there are (eisin) many (polloi) gods (theoi), and (kai) many (polloi) lords (kurioi),

1 Cor. 8:6 (LIT/UBS4) BUT (all’), to us (hēmin) [there is, v5, RE] one (heis) God (theos), the (ho) Father (patēr), out (ex) of whom (hou) [are] all things (panta)!

And (kai) we (hēmeis) [are] in (eis) him (auton).

And (kai) [there is, v5, RE] one (heis) lord (kurios), Jesus (Iēsous) Christ (Christos), through (di’) [the sake, AE] of whom (hou) [are] all the things (ta panta);

and (kai) we (hēmeis) [are] [in God, RE] through (di’) [the sake, AE] of him (autou).

1 Cor. 8:7 (LIT/UBS4) BUT (all’), the (hē) knowledge (gnōsis) [of this, AE] [is] absolutely not (ouk) in (en) all (pasin)!

But (de) as (hōs) [is] the (tē) custom together with (sunētheia) some (tines), until (heōs) at this time (arti) they eat (esthiousin) [an] idolatrous sacrifice (eidōlothuton) of the (tou) idol (eidōlou);

and (kai) the (hē) conscience (suneidēsis) of them (autōn), it being (ousa) disabled (asthenēs), is soiled (molunetai).

1 Cor. 8:8 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) food (brōma) shall absolutely not stand us alongside3936 (hēmas ou parastēsei) to the (tō) God (theō)!

(For a believer's responsibility to stand himself alongside of the Father through doing good works, in order to receive anything from him, see Mat. 6:1-4, 18:19, 19:26, 21:42; Mark 10:27, 12:11; Luke 1:30, 37; John 5:44, 6:45-46, 8:38-42, 9:16, 33, 17:5-8; Rom. 2:11-13, 6:13, 12:1; 1 Cor. 7:24, 8:8a; 2 Cor. 9:8; Gal. 3:11; Eph. 6:8; 1 Tim. 2:10; 2 Tim. 3:17; Tit. 2:14, 3:8,14; Heb. 10:24; James 1:5-7, 27; 1 Pet. 2:20-21; 2 Pet. 3:8; 2 John 1:3; Rev. 2:28)

If perhaps (ean) we may not eat (mē phagōmen) [of idolatrous sacrifices, v7, RE], we absolutely do not lack (oute husteroumetha)!

If perhaps (ean) we may eat (phagōmen) [of idolatrous sacrifices, v7, RE], we absolutely do not abound (oute perisseuomen)!

1 Cor. 8:9 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) see to it (blepete) [that, AE] this (hautē), the (hē) authority (exousia) of you (humōn), may not somehow cause itself to become (mē pōs genētai) one of stumbling (proskomma) for the (tois) disabled ones (asthenesin).

1 Cor. 8:10 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) if perhaps (ean) anyone (tis) may see (idē) you (se), the one (ton) holding (echonta) knowledge (gnōsin), causing yourself to lie down2621 (katakeimenon) in (en) [an] idol temple (eidōleiō), shall absolutely not (ouchi) the (hē) conscience (suneidēsis) of him (autou) to eat (esthiein) the (ta) idolatrous sacrifices (eidōlothuta), it being (ontos) disabled (asthenous), be built into the domed-roof house3618 (oikodomēthēsetai eis to)!?

1 Cor. 8:11 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) [is] the one (ho) being [a] disabled one (asthenōn) being lost (apollutai) in (en) the (tē) knowledge (gnōsei) [given, AE] to you (sē), the (ho) brother (adelphos) through (di’) [the sake, AE] of whom (hon) Christ (Christos) died away (apethanen)?

1 Cor. 8:12 (LIT/UBS4) But (de) thusly (houtōs), you sinning (hamartanontes) into (eis) the (tous) brothers (adelphous) and (kai) beating (tuptontes) the (tēn) conscience (suneidēsin) of them (autōn), it being disabled (asthenousan), you sin (hamartanete) into (eis) Christ (Christon)!

1 Cor. 8:13 (LIT/UBS4) So be it therefore (dioper), if (ei) food (brōma) scandalizes (skandalizei) the (ton) brother (adelphon) of me (mou), no (mē), absolutely not may I eat (ou phagō) meat (krea) into (eis) the (ton) age (aiōna), in order that (hina) I may not scandalize (mē skandalisō) the (ton) brother (adelphon) of me (mou)!
