Chapter 13

Update:  2024.05.17

Rom. 13:1 (LIT/UBS4) <Let> every (pasa) soul (psuchē) be put in submission5293 (hupotassesthō) to authorities (exousiais) being superior (huperechousais);

because (gar) there is (estin) absolutely not (ou) [an] authority (exousia) if (ei) not (mē) [an authority, ER] under (hupo) [the authority, ER] of God (theou)

But (de) the (hai) [souls, RE] being (ousai) under (hupo) [authority, ER] of God (theou), they are (eisin) [souls, RE] having been arranged (tetagmenai).

Rom. 13:2 (LIT/UBS4) And so (hōste) the (ho) [soul, v1, RE] causing himself to be arranged in opposition (antitassomenos) to the (tē) authority (exousia) [of God, v1, RE] has stood opposed (anthestēken) to the (tē) thorough arrangement (diatagē) of the (autou) God (theou).

But (de) the (hoi) [souls, v1, RE] having stood opposed (anthestēkotes) shall cause themselves to receive (lēmpsontai) [a] judicial decision (krima) for themselves (heautois).

(For placing yourself under whose authority, see John 14:21; Acts 26:18; Rom. 13:1-2)

Rom. 13:3 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) the (hoi) chief ones758 (archontes) [under authority of God, v1, RE] are absolutely not (ouk eisin) [a] fear (phobos) to the (tō) good (agathō) work (ergō), BUT (alla), to the (tō) malicious (kakō) [work, RE]!

But (de) do you desire (theleis) not (mē) to fear (phobeisthai) the (tēn) authority (exousian)

Do (poiei) the (to) good (agathon) [work, RE], and (kai) you shall have (hexeis) praise (epainon) out (ex) of her (autēs).

Rom. 13:4 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) [[a] chief one, v3, RE] is (estin) [a] minister (diakonos) of God (theou) for you (soi), into (eis) the (to) good (agathon) [work, v3, RE].

But (de) if perhaps (ean) you may do (poiēs) the (to) malicious (kakon) [work, v3, RE], fear (phobou), because (gar) [[a] chief one, v3, RE] absolutely does not wear (ou phorei) the (tēn) knife (machairan) in vain (eikē).

Because (gar) he is (estin) [a] minister (diakonos) of God (theou), [an] avenger (ekdikos) in (eis) anger (orgēn) to the one (tō), the one (to) habitually practicing (prassonti) [a] malicious (kakon) [work, v3, RE],

Rom. 13:5 (LIT/UBS4) through which (dio) [anger, v4, RE] [it, AE] [is] [a] necessity (anankē) to be put in submission5293 (hupotassesthai);

absolutely not (ou) only (monon) through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (tēn) anger (orgēn) [of [a] minister of God, v4, RE], BUT (alla), through (dia) [the sake, AE] of the (tēn) conscience (suneidēsin) [of you, AE] also (kai)!

Rom. 13:6 (LIT/UBS4) Because (gar) through (dia) [the sake, AE] of this (touto) you pay [a] termination tax5055 (teleite) and (kai) property taxes5411 (phorous).

(For termination tax see Mat. 17:24-27; Rom. 6:12-23, 10:1-10, 13:1-11)

[Be put in submission, v5, RE] because (gar) [ministers of God, v4, RE] are (eisin) liturgists (leitourgoi) of God (theou), ones persevering forward (proskarterountes) in (eis) [the] same (auto) thing (touto)!

Rom. 13:7 (LIT/UBS4) Give away (apodote) the (tas) indebtedness (opheilas) to all (pasin):

for the (tō) [indebtedness, ER] of the (ton) property tax5411 (phoron), [give away, ER] the (ton) property tax5411 (phoron);

for the (tō) [indebtedness, ER] of the (ton) termination tax5056 (telos), [give away, ER] the (ton) termination tax5056 (telos);

for the (tō) [indebtedness, ER] of the (ton) fear (phobon), [give away, ER] the (ton) fear (phobon);

for the (tō) [indebtedness, ER] of the (tēn) honor (timēn), [give away, ER] the (ton) honor (timēn).

Rom. 13:8 (LIT/UBS4) Owe (opheilete) to not one (mēdeni) [soul, v1, RE] not one (mēden) [indebtedness, v7, ER], if (ei) not (mē) the (to) [indebtedness, v7, ER] to love (agapan) one another (allēlous)!

Because (gar) the (ho) [soul, v1, RE] loving (agapōn) the (ton) other (heteron) has fulfilled (peplērōken) law (nomon);

Rom. 13:9 (LIT/UBS4) because (gar) the (to) [law, v8, RE] [says, AE], absolutely do not do adultery (ou moicheuseis), absolutely do not murder (ou phoneuseis), absolutely do not steal (ou klepseis), absolutely do not lust (ou epithumēseis).

And (kai) if (ei) [there, AE] [is] any (tis) other kind (hetera) of injunction (entolē) in (en) the (tō) Word (logō) for this (toutō) [indebtedness, v7, RE], it is headed up (anakephalaioutai) in (en) the (tō) [injunction, RE], “Love (agapēseis) the (ton) neighborly one (plēsion) of you (sou) as (hōs) yourself (seauton).”

(See Lev. 19:18)

Rom. 13:10 (LIT/UBS4) The (hē) love (agapē) absolutely does not cause itself to work (ouk ergazetai) evil (kakon) to the (tō) neighborly one (plēsion)!

Therefore (oun), the (hē) love (agapē) [is] of law (nomou).

Rom. 13:11 (LIT/UBS4) And (kai) you are ones having seen (eidotes) the (ton) time (kairon) of this (touto), that (hoti) [a/the] hour (hōra) of you (humas) to be awakened (egerthēnai) out (ex) of sleep (hupnou) [has come near, AE] already (ēdē)!

Because (gar) [is] the (hē) wholeness (sōtēria) of us (hēmōn) nearer (enguteron) now (nun), or (ē) when (hote) we believed (episteusamen)?

Rom. 13:12 (LIT/UBS4) The (hē) night (nux) beat forward4298 (proekopsen), but (de) the (hē) day (hēmera) has come near1448 (ēngiken).

Therefore (oun), may we cause ourselves to put away (apothōmetha) the (ta) works (erga) of the (tou) darkness (skotous), but (de) may we enrobe ourselves in (endusōmetha) the (ta) weapons (hopla) of the (tou) light (phōtos)!

Rom. 13:13 (LIT/UBS4) As (hōs) in (en) [the] day (hēmera) may we walk around (peripatēsōmen) well-schemed (euschēmonōs);

not (mē) for revelings (kōmois) and (kai) for intoxications (methais);

not ( ē) for beddings (koitais) and (kai) for unrestrained excesses (aselgeiais);

not (mē) for rivalry (eridi) and (kai) for jealousy (zēlō).

Rom. 13:14 (LIT/UBS4) BUT (alla), enrobe yourselves in (endusasthe) the (ton) lord (kurion), Jesus (Iēsous) Christ (Christon)!

And (kai) of the (tēs) flesh (sarkos), do not cause yourselves to make (mē poieisthe) forethought (pronoian) into (eis) lusts (epithumiais).
